Residents of Massachusetts are gearing up for the first legal form of casino gambling allowed in the state. The bill, passed in 2011, allows for one casino slots parlor and three resort casinos; the first of which is set to open this summer in Plainville, MA by Penn National Gaming. The company has revised its plans for the slots parlor at Plainridge Park, giving impending patrons a clearer view of what’s to come.

Penn National submitted the updated plans for the casino slots parlor to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission on Thursday. According to the MGC, most of the original plans remain intact, but a few revisions have been made to areas like conference space, the food court, entertainment and restaurants.

The $225 million project will still include a casino slots parlor with 1,250 machines to be installed. Slot machines will be the only gambling amenity on the gaming floor. No live or electronic gaming tables will be provided, as per the licensing agreement.

As for alterations to the initial proposal, Penn National Gaming has elected to expand the size of its conference room in order to accommodate up to 300 guests. The casino operator has reduced the number of food court eateries to three, billeting for a coffee and pastry house, a burger bistro and a pizza restaurant.

Also in the original proposal, Penn National announced intentions to open an exclusive sports bar within the casino slots parlor to be named ‘Flutie’s Sports Pub’, honoring quarterback Doug Flutie. During his time at Boston College (1981-1984), Flutie won the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award, and the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award. He spent three years in the NFL with the Chicago Bears (1986) and New England Patriots (1987-89) before moving on to the CFL, where he was eventually named the ‘greatest Canadian Football League player of all time’ in 2006.

The new plans state that Plainridge Park Casino will feature an oyster bar and grille, as well as an entertainment venue fully equipped with a live stage and dance floor.

Stephen Crosby, Chairman of the MGC, found no fault with the revised plans for the casino slots parlor. “Everything is looking good,” said Crosby on Thursday after reviewing the report.

The MGC also issued a commendation to Plainridge Park Casino yesterday for “exceeding diversity goals”. According to the tribute, the commitment of Plainridge Park and Penn National Gaming “resulted in numerous vendor and supplier opportunities for Minority, Women and Veteran Owned businesses.”

The state had set goals for the operators of the casino slots parlor to meet. They were to grant 4% of business enterprise opportunities to minorities, 7% to women and 3% to veterans. Those goals were greatly exceeded by providing 12% to minorities, 13% to women and 10% to veterans.
